Adult Programs

Dinghy Programs:

Women on the Water ($250 + HST) (Register here)

For newcomers to the Yacht Club, a one (1) year SHYC membership is included in the price of this program.

Beginning with a Friday evening onshore orientation, the weekend long sailing program features each student paired with a CANSail certified instructor or one of our SHYC member volunteers – each an accomplished dinghy sailor/athlete themselves.

Students learn basic sheeting, steering, and boat handling on all points of sail, while also learning how to adjust their bodies and boats for changes in direction and wind speed while sailing. As such, sailors can then sail safely within defined boundaries set by an instructor and perform boat-handling maneuvers in a controlled manner. Each session has space limitations to ensure an optimal coach: student ratio.

Women on the Water 2 ($150 + HST) ( Register Here)

This course is a continuation of the original Women on the Water program. It builds on the basics that are learned in the first course and focuses on developing additional skills in sailing. Women on the Water is a pre-requisite for this course, or equivalent CANSail levels. Each session has space limitations to ensure an optimal coach: student ratio.

Reasonably priced Private Lessons are also available through the Sailing School to teach any individual the basics of Dinghy Sailing. Please contact Shelburne.sailing.academy@gmail.com for pricing and booking.

Keelboat Programs:

Adult Learn to Sail – Keelboat Sailing ($300 + HST (non-member), $150 + HST (member) (Register Here)

For newcomers to the Yacht Club, a one (1) year SHYC membership is included in the price of this program.

This is an entry level of Sail Canada Standards for keelboat and cruising. It is the recommended starting point for individuals with minimum practical on water experience and builds basic sailing skills with a focus on the operation of the vessel as crew. Candidates completing the course will be able to competently contribute to the operation of a keelboat in moderate daytime conditions. The course can be completed in 12-15 hours.

At the conclusion the candidate will be able to identify and describe parts of the keelboat, nautical terms, identify basic weather and where to obtain weather information, duties of the skipper and crew.

The candidate will gain experience in maneuvering under power, handling under sail, maneuvering dockside or at a mooring, and basic seamanship including safely using winches, coiling and securing lines, knots, and furling sails.

The classroom portion of this course will be held in the Sailing Academy’s classroom and the practical portion on Shelburne Harbour Yacht Club members boats.
